CERAMIC PETROLOGY GROUP MEETING

Local v Non-local: one or more definitions

Wednesday 15 November 2000 Room 1163, Ground Floor, Parkes Building (Building 65) University of Southampton

What does local mean to you? How do we interpret whether pottery which we have been analysing using petrological methods is made locally or not? There has been a growing awareness that the term local is used in many different ways and that usage varies amongst petrologists and between chronological periods of investigation. The meeting will review how the term has been used by pottery specialists generally within different periods and how this may be affecting our interpretations of production, distribution and procurement of ceramics. This information will be fundamentally important to the current English Heritage United Kingdom Thin Section Database Project (UKTS), providing a useful forum for open discussion.
